THEY SAY: Writing for the August 2010 issue of Parents magazine, David Kushner jokes about organizing a Vegas getaway to recuperate from his planned vasectomy. With “two great kids, a wonderful wife, and a writing career,” Kushner “didn’t want anything to mess it up - like an unplanned pregnancy.” He looked forward to “more enjoyable sex, free from birth control intrusions and pregnancy fears.” Can a vasectomy really offer those guarantees?

The Pill Should Be Prescribed Less, Not Made Available Over the Counter

The birth control pills carries real risks.

The Pill is not Tylenol or cough medication.

(Sept. 24, 2010) Responding to recent reports that the birth control pill may be made available in the United States without a prescription, a Canadian guest editorial writer has lambasted the idea, citing studies showing its dangers and saying it would be bad for women’s health.

Calling it “Do It Yourself Doctoring,” Andrea Mrozek, the manager of research and communications at the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada, said that “the Pill is not Tylenol or cough medication. Certainly it’s widely used. However, forever downplayed are the nasty and known side effects….”

(Sept. 8, 2010) The following is an excerpt from a column by Michael Manhart, from the September - October 2010 issue of “Family Foundations,” the publication of the Couple to Couple League International (CCL). Manhart is CCL’s executive director.

In 2005 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (a technical arm of the World Health Organization) declared the combined oral contraceptive (the most commonly used form of the Pill) a carcinogen due to its documented negative effects on the risks of breast, cervical, and liver cancers.
